What an Apple Pie Taught Me About Creative Purpose

Did you know that the earth points to its Creator?

Imagine walking into a room and being greeted by the irresistible scent of a freshly baked apple pie. What’s the first thought that fills your mind?

“Mmm, I need to try this!
Who made it?
Who do I ask for a slice?”

One thing I didn’t think was,

“This pie appeared from nowhere, here for me to consume.”

Even thinking that its FOR me implies it has purpose which implies it was created.

In the same way, nature is constantly declaring the glory of its Creator and doing so without a single word. It is a spectacular, diverse masterpiece - alive, growing and completely interactive and seemingly endless.

Romans 1:1-20 capture this truth perfectly: "For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God."

No matter how many debates, documentaries, or lectures I’ve encountered, I cannot convince myself that a pie or a watch, or an entire world full of LIFE could come from nothing.

It was all created.
It has a Creator.

Just like when I spot a hot apple pie cooling on the counter, even without witnessing its creation, I know better than to touch it before finding out who made it and why. I can only hope and pray that it was made, at least in part, for me.

That pie alone sparks a journey to find its creator.

I'm not making a case for a Creator right now, I'm taking it way back to prove a case for making art with purpose.

“In the beginning God created the heavens and earth” Genesis chapter 1, verse 1. The very first words in the bible.

God introduced Himself as Creator, then made us in His Image and in doing so gave us the power to create. He might have done things a little differently if he hadn't wanted us to be creative beings.

“But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish in the sea inform you. Which of all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this? In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind. - Job 12:7-10

So, the earth is declaring the majesty of its Creator and now I'd like to ask you what your art is declaring?

When we make art that reflects beauty, love, hope, - His ways - we are testifying to who God is—just as nature does. Our art can serve as an invitation to seek Him.

This truth can fuel endless ideas, themes, and subjects in your work. But it’s not just about giving you topics to explore. My real hope is that this understanding—that you were made with purpose—lights a fire in you. A drive to create art that means something. Art that matters. Art with purpose.

Stay Bold,

God Made You - Now What?
I believe we’re created beings, and because we’re made in the image of our Creator, we’re wired to create. It’s in us. Sure, that sounds nice—"Let’s make art!" But hold up. Before I get all artsy on you, let’s talk about something bigger. Real talk. Stuff not many people, especially believers, seem to want to dig into. Here’s the thing. We need to stop and think. Not just about our art, but abo...
Your talent is speaking - are you listening?
The secret language you didn’t know you speak - talent. And yes, you have it!  Talent is a natural aptitude—something we’re born with. Some describe it as a gift that exists apart from effort. But does that mean some have talent and others don’t? Yes and no. Everyone has a talent, but talents vary. Some excel in sports, others in the arts or sciences. But what is talent? If it’s innate, how did...
The One Thing To Stand Against.
Do you ever feel stifled? Like you just don’t know how to move forward with your art? What to do next? How to overcome the next roadblock? 🙌 I do!  These thoughts lead to questioning the very act of making art. Should you even continue if you're feeling this stuck? I've experienced it myself—sometimes it's self-imposed, and other times it feels like an external force acting upon me. After unive...
